3. Spring of Five
Spring is in the air!
The dogwood trees are heavy with fluffy pink and white blossoms. Every shade of the color green appears on the tips of living things that spring from the ground.
The friends leave their scarves draped on hooks by the door, load up a picnic sack of sandwiches and strike off for a day enjoying the bright watery sunshine that washes the neighborhood with a golden glow. The neighbors have all started their new gardens for the year and seeds buried under frothy, turned soil begin to burst through the ground to reach towards the sky.
There’s so much to see and do to help the growing things and it was wonderful to be outside in the crispy sunshine helping friends and neighbors after a long, cold winter spent by warm fires on dark evenings.
Mousey, Clementine Pennyfoot and Teddy Bearon are strolling down the gravel lane that circles The Orchard neighborhood, when they see their good friend, Sadie Scout, the honeybee whizzing past them. As she sees the three figures on the lane, she whirls in the air and flies up to land on the fence post for a quick chat.
“Hiya, friends! What are you three up to today?” Sadie hums.
“Hi, Sadie!” the friends all say together.
“We’re going down to the pond to fetch some water for all of the gardens in the neighborhood today. What about you?” Clementine replies.
”Oh, you know me! Just being a busy bee. Today, my job is to scout out new sources of honey flow. With all of these flowers blooming, I’m sure to find a good patch for us to work. Then, I’ll tell the others in the hive, so we can carry home the sweet stuff. It’s a beautiful day for scouting flowers!”
“Well, we’ll give you a holler if we see any good ones. We know you like the bright colors, Sadie!” Teddy tells her.
Then, they’re off to the pond. Teddy carries the big bucket for them because he’s the strongest, but Mousey has several bottles in his backpack and clever Clementine thought to bring a wheelbarrow.
